Dr. Avo Artinyan is a board-certified general surgeon, fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, and colorectal surgeon known nationally for his minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgical oncology work. He specializes in laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal colon and rectal cancer surgery with particular recognition for advancing organ-preserving and sphincter-preserving techniques in rectal cancer care. As an early developer of transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), Dr. Artinyan has helped shape the field of advanced rectal cancer surgery. He also brings expertise in the surgical treatment of gastric, pancreaticobiliary, breast, and soft tissue cancers, along with benign conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, and abdominal wall hernias. A respected figure among his peers, Dr. Artinyan is often trusted to operate on fellow surgeons, trainees, and their family members. He is one of the few Southern California surgeons offering totally intracorporeal laparoscopic and robotic surgery, providing patients with excellent oncologic outcomes and enhanced recovery.
Dr. Artinyan earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency and a dedicated colorectal surgery research fellowship at the University of Southern California-Los Angeles County Medical Center. He then pursued a three-year clinical and research fellowship in surgical oncology at City of Hope Cancer Center where he focused on gastrointestinal and colorectal surgical oncology, as well as robotic-assisted surgery. This comprehensive training laid the foundation for his innovative approach to complex cancer surgeries and his continued dedication to advancing surgical care.
In 2009, Dr. Artinyan joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX where he built one of the country's busiest robotic surgical oncology and colorectal surgery programs at the Texas Medical Center. His leadership as chief of the division of colon and rectal surgery earned him numerous honors, including the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award, the Baylor STAR Award for Clinical Excellence, and multiple teaching awards. In 2018, he was recruited to Los Angeles by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong to serve as co-director of surgical oncology for the Verity Medical Foundation where he began laying the groundwork for a world-class cancer center. Dr. Artinyan remains active in research, having over 60 peer-reviewed publications and national and international speaking engagements. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of several leading surgical societies, including ASCRS, SSO, AAS, and SAGES. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Surgical Research and is past president of the International Armenian Association of Hematology and Oncology.
